DVI splitters can they do what I want them to do?

Ok my plan is to get a really nice DVI 20" monitor with HD so I can use the HD to play 360 and my PC games but most monitors come with 1 DVI port so my question is if I use the Dvi Splitter will the picture quality go down for both the PC and 360, how can I switch between using 360 and pc on the screen and does DVI support HD anyway (I always thought DVI was the HD of PC lol)

Many monitors have both a DVI and a VGA input.
