Mad Stones are still in use anywhere in the world to treat Mad Dog Bites?
I understand, Mad Stones were the only treatment for centuries if they had been bitten by a rabid dog or other animal that had gone mad.
Mostly you never hear (hopefully) of the Madstone be used for mad dog bites (rabies). It was generally usse 1800s to around the late 20th century United States. The Madstone was a calcified mass from the digestive tract of ruminant animals (such as as deer, goats and cows) and consisted of fur of the animal, plant stems, and other indigestible matter the animal had eaten. In many respects, can be treated as a hairy ball very hard. The Madstone was placed directly on a bite from a committed "Mad Dog" (remember at that time, canine rabies is endemic in the U.S.). The stone is still attached to the wound oozing of person (On its own, without a bandage or tape) for several days, sucking all the rage "poison". Once the body had been "erased" of rabies, magic Madstone dropped the wound. The Madstone could be used again and again, after soaking in warm milk.
