So I have a question about laser technology.?
ok my question is when is the first laser rifle expected to enter into
military service? and would it give off any sort of report, muzzle flash,
or beam? I know about the shock wave that is all the rage. But my
question is would a shockwave mean that the weapon gives off
some form of viewable energy? Like say when it hits a target it would
send them flying? or what do they mean by Shockwave?
light is composed of photons. the light you can see is a very narrow band rangeing from red (ir) to violet (uv). you've seen rainbows.
most light you see is diverging ( sunlight, flashlight, light bulbs etc). sunlight passing through a lens can be diverging or converging depending on the shape of the lens ( popping ants with a magnifier). laser light is coherant. all the photons are aligned in the same direction. to produce a laser beam that can burn something you need more power which is all a laser can do.
there would be no report. ( you can't hear a flashlight turn on) a muzzle flash is created by unburned gunpowder. a shock wave is produced by air pressure in an explosion so a laser would not produce a shock wave. the only thing you might see would be your enemy burst into flames or a hole burned through your target. a high power laser might cause your enemy to explode if the fluids in his body boiled fast enough.
at this time there are no laser rifles that can do this. it would take to much power.
