how can i transfer a video from a Sony video tape recorder to my Laptop?
o.k the tape video recorder has a USB opening, i bought the USB cable but for some reason my laptop could not download the drivers because it's not compatible with windows vista, o.k i tried the same thing with my old laptop windows 2000, i download the drivers form the sony website, the laptop recognize the hardware, but After that i don't know what to do!
I also tried the S-video cable, but nothing happens when i connect the cable from the recorder to the laptop.
Please help!
You did not tell us which Sony camcorder...
Analog (Beta, VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8) camcorders require an "analog digital bridge" or a "capture card". Pinnacle (Dazzle) and Canopus are common.
Digital (Digital8, miniDV) camcorders require a firewire cable to connect the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire port on your computer. If your computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one. The S-video connector on your laptop is OUT only - from the laptop to a monitor (or TV or projector) - not in... so, no surprise that did not work. Firewire, DV, IEEE1394 and i.LINK are all the same thing. USB will not work; USB-firewire adapter/converters will not work. Whether you need a 4-pin to 6-pin or 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable is unknown because we don't know what firewire port is on your computer. The digital tape based consumer camcorder's DV port is ALWAYS 4-pin, so the other side that connects to the computer is the determining factor.
